When the invitation says smart casual, which more and more are of late, I often wonder how smart and how casual. This season can be a bit tricky – it can be warm, it can be cool, it can rain, it can be muggy, so the answer is to dress for all seasons in one day.
By this, I mean layering. The beauty of this concept is you can stick to one colour from head to toe or pick out some items that coordinate or clash – whatever is your wish – and edit your outfit as the event goes on.
Do not be fooled. Smart Casual doesn’t mean denim. Coloured jeans, chinos, flannel or wool mix trousers will all work and being available in muted and colourful hues, means you can choose to be smart with a capital S or casual with a capital C, depending also on the event itself.
The good thing about the more muted tones like khaki, navy or beige means you can pair them with more things. A white shirt and a blazer for a date, a blue shirt for work and for events with this dress code, a patterned shirt and a livelier colour jumper than you may usually wear. Do consider comfort when you are dressing for these events. You may have to stand around or be active or even sit around for ages – so choose trousers with a bit of stretch.
This season, green is everywhere and in every one of its hundreds of shades. There’s diesel green, pine , Caribbean and probably my favourite, this palmtree green.
It livens up beige and gives interest to navy, obviously goes with black and cream but the best combo is grey with green; try it ….
So add a coloured jumper to your trans season wardrobe and wear a shirt underneath. If you think you’ll need extra warmth, and your judgement on the event is key, a padded gilet could be the answer.
To shed your layers – a padded gilet can be worn over a shirt and the jumper over your shoulders.Like a soave European actor. Man bag optional.
