I’ll bet you think denim was invented in the USA. Well, it was actually first created in a town in the South of France, Nimes, and so it being from the town, ie, De Nimes, over time, became denim. It has been used since the mid 19th century for workwear primarily but became fashionable in the 1950’s in post-war America.
Today, the shapes vary tremendously, straight leg, barrel, flared, cropped – and of course there’s the inclusion of Lycra for stretch, stonewashing and overdyeing to add colours, but still, add a plain white top and you’re set.
For ladies, adding metallic sandals or white pumps can take the same outfit from desk to dinner and the plethora of styles mean you can channel a hippie chic 70’s vibe, adding this season’s take on platform shoes and a striped top to a denim pinafore dress or pairing this uber comfortable popover over denim shorts for late nights on the beach.
Perhaps a more feminine look is what you’re after? How about a denim skirtwith a floral or flouncy top? Wear coloured sandals or ballet pumps to complete the look.
Menswear has a similar variety of styles and what looks nicer than a man in crisp denim trousers, loafers, a white shirt and a blazer? Again, men have the option of changing the length of their trousers with a simple turn up or they can opt for shorts for the summer months. These have stretch so for beach games, boat trips and days out they look cool and are comfortable.
One of the best things about denim, apart from the easy to look after aspect, is how clothing is trans-seasonal. Adding boots and a jumper to all bar the shorts, winterises it! Denim never goes out of fashion’ you can always find a shape and a shade to suit your current wardrobe needs.
